Morocco: Eschewing (or is that skewering?) Liberace Morocco

Picture_9Dateline:  Morocco.  Making a radical life style decision leads to much reflection about who you are and who you want to be, as well as what you are doing and what you want to be doing.  Because we had chosen to live overseas (and had been doing so for nearly 10 years), we were lucky to have had lots of visitors.  And we loved it. We loved having a home that was welcoming and loved having people come and stay.  We are “people people,” if you know what I mean.  Or maybe that’s “people persons.” (Or maybe that’s just plain confused about the English language.)

Anyway, our home was not typical.  It was filled with artifacts from our travels: doors from India, embroideries from Azerbaijan, chests from Tibet, antique posters from France, old spice boxes from Yemen, zebra skin pillows from Namibia, lanterns from Morocco, and so on.  We also admired modern furniture and bought pieces whenever we could afford them.  We desperately coveted “stuff” and upon purchase, would feel the rush of relief that addicts must feel when they swallow that pill.  People would often comment that our home looked like a gallery.  We aspired towards a style that might be called modern ethnic chic.

We began to think that we might be able to create a new kind of space for visitors to Marrakesh.  Visitors who might appreciate a Moroccan style that was not the over-the-top 1001 Arabian Nights look that was so common in guest houses in Morocco -- yards and yards of heavy fabric, every room a saturated color, multi-colored tiles covering every wall.  Belly dancers, anyone?  We called this look Liberace Morocco.  And while it was fun to spend a night there, like Disney Land, it grew old fast.  We liked décor that was a bit more eclectic.  Moroccan to be sure, but not the kind of clichéd Moroccan that hit you over the head with a sledge hammer.

The more we talked about it, the more we liked it.  A guest house.  Our own.  Our own style, our own way.  Would you come?
