Morocco: Majorelle blue
Throughout Marrakesh, you see a very special vibrant blue called "Majorelle blue." It was made famous by French artist Jacques Majorelle (1886-1962). Health problems brought him to Marrakesh in 1919, where he later bought land and created an amazing garden around his studio, known as the Majorelle Gardens. My mother told me that if she could have her way, she would walk in the Majorelle Gardens every single morning. And I can see why. The garden is filled with spectacular exotic plants and cacti. And everywhere you see pots and design elements in the blue that Majorelle made famous.
After his death, the garden fell into disrepair until it was rediscovered by Yves Saint-Laurent, who had it restored. The garden is now open to the public for a small fee and offers a cool and lovely haven from the hub bub of Marrakesh. I like to go after a hectic day in Morocco's souks and just rejuvenate.
I was interested to see that the Conran Shop has made a Marrakesh Chair in Majorelle's blue. Note the Moorish arch of the chair back. It would be so nice to have two of these chairs in your garden with a Moroccan tile table. Just the place to read your newspaper in the morning. If only it were a little less pricey. Another deep sigh....

They sell Majorelle Blue at the paint store in Marrakech (you know, the little hardware hanoots) - I should know, because I painted my door with it. Just go buy a couple of cute can chairs in the souk, and paint away.

Thanks for the tip. Have you continued to use Majorelle Blue in the US?
