Morocco: and DIY design?
BBC Homes has a Design Inspiration site that provides suggestions for a range of decorating styles and budgets. The reader can search by room or design style (traditional, minimal, modern, global, etc).
Under the global style category, I noticed that one of the entries was about how to create a Mesmerizing Moroccan bedroom. The room was designed by Graham Wynne and features a back lit fretwork headboard. The page provides ideas for spicing up a boring bedroom to create a modern Moroccan mecca using traditional materials in a contemporary way.
I love fretwork and grew up in a house filled with antique Persian mashroobiya. The idea of using it in new and creative ways appeals to me. We have a few large old pieces that we are hoping to incorporate into our guest houses. Hmmmm... a headboard? Maybe... Cabinets? Possibly....
Take a stroll around the site and see what design inspiration you might find. Be forewarned, however, that the quality of what is provided can be quite uneven. For example, for the Moroccan bedroom it is suggested that you create your own Moroccan relics by smashing a patterned brick into chunks and placing it in box frames to look like original museum pieces. What?! Promise me that you won't do that, okay?

That room is drop dead gorgeous! The colors and the textures... oh how pretty. Thank you for pointing us to a great site. I hope that you do something similar so we can see photos. :)

Just for weekend fun, I`ll try the brick thing and let you know!!!

I love fretwork, and the headboard, but under the one in the picture I would feel a bit threatened. I would opt for less, one panel would feel perfect for me.
Do the insides of a fretwork cabinet get dusty easily? (Am I too practical here? *g*)
Have a great day,
Merisi

Got a kick out of the "Eastern Promise" bedroom. Hmmm wonder what I could hope for in that bedroom. k

Well dear , i can see you have been researching well , BBC is great. I do love Graham , he is very good but you have to look for Lawrence llewelyn-Bowen (use to do Front home in and out , he use to team up with a great gardener called diarmuid gavin) he does a lovely pink kitchen , i am sure Pink Mohair would love it! But anyway i do remember whatching this programm last year(changing room uk) and i have to admit they do come up with some very interesting way of doing Art! Well they are the designer after all!

Ah, yes, the infamous Changing Rooms wonderful style secrets... They should just stick to the basics, when they try to create a unique piece of art things inevitably fall apart, literally.
But it's a great site for ideas. Just ignore some of the more ludicrous suggestions. And I have to say that I did not believe the photos you have posted came from that site, they look fab.
Ps. Marzipan, oh yes, one of my favourite treats too :)

I had that bookmarked somewhere and had forgotten all about it, thank you for reminding me! Hopefully it will not be long before I can start decorating someplace new :) Also, sorry if I am a bit late, but I want to add my own little Hurrah! for you and your writing, and am glad that you seem to be getting over your block. And I vote for cabinets as per the fretwork, I think that would look fab!

Your to blame I did no work this morning (spent an age looking at the sites).
If you get a chance, take a look at our Lawrence (re Diane in Gibralter). Actually he is an intellgent man, really knows his history. But what do you think to those shirts (be honest)?????

I really love the headboard and lanterns are definitely my thing.
Maybe, just maybe, I'll get up the energy to do some work on my Moroccan Bedroom this weekend. If I do I'll post pics on my blog of the progress. We have a lot to do and it will definitely be an experience.

giggling about the brick chunks....
what i love most about these rooms is the rich warm *color*... glowing and so nice with the gold and coppery touches. yum.

Graham Wynne shouldn't be set lose on anyones house. He started on Changing Rooms and upset almost everyone whose rooms he worked on. Everything is shoddy and slapped together. You can bet your ass that fireplace is made from MDF. 10 out of 10 to the photographer.
I may sound a bit off here but the bit you mention about the bricks is typical of him.
However the BBC do turn out some great design programmes. but our Channel 4's Grand Designs with Kevin McLeod is THE BEST.

Wow, the takeover, Morocco style. I can only imagine the dream world you are a part of out there!!!

That bedroom is gorgeous. Love the warmth of the colors. I used similar colors in my dining room, but tempered it by pairing it with Aztec gold. I like the intensity of this.
In winter sometimes I find myself sitting in my living room, gazing absently into my dining room as if it were a fireplace.

I don't even understand those instructions "smashing a patterned brick..."
so I can't "copy" it.
But that's a gorgeous room!

Too late! I did the smashed brick thing... just about the time my friend (I only have one :-D) stopped visiting.... Was this the problem, I wonder?

I love BBC websites, they are always informative and so much fun, not so sure about the brick art though.

i have to say that i dont think Graham Wynne and morocco go well together!! I think its pretty hard to 'create' morocco in this way! Its more like a theatre set than the real thing...

That room is gorgeous, and I love the way they've opted to showcase a smaller room, instead of the really large bedroom that most people don't actually have.

you have my word that I will not smash bricks, nor any other household materials to make fake museum pieces.
