Suzanis: all sewn up
Anyone who knows me, knows my love for ethnic textiles. There’s something about the hand dyed, the hand blocked, the hand sewn, and the hand embroidered that gets me all flushed and bothered. And the irony is that I barely know how to sew a stitch myself. You would think that I would have all kinds of glorious plans for my collection of fabrics. But the truth is that I rarely buy textiles with a purpose - I just buy them because they’re beautiful; nothing more, nothing less. My normally darling husband once threw a temper tantrum over my overstuffed textiles closet, muttering, What are you going to do with all this stuff, Maryam? He even once went so far as to sneakily send a box to the US full of old saris, embroideries and appliqué work from Rajasthan. It sat there in storage for months with no one to love it. I mourned every single piece.
Here’s a little stack of some of my suzanis, those embroideries from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The blog TrendBites is featuring some of mine right here. I am planning to break these out at Peacock Pavilions. Take a peek.
