I have been struggling these last few weeks under the weight of Peacock Pavilions, our Marrakech boutique hotel in-the-making. The challenges are so many, the obstacles seemingly so unsurmountable. We have just gotten our third bank loan, and it all seems precarious - so very precarious - to have this many dreams wrapped up in this one project of ours. What if......what if it all goes awry some how?
We planted 200 white rose bushes on the Marrakech land this weekend. Skylar and Tristan's little hands patted the earth earnestly around each fragile bush. So many of the rose bushes have not even one bud, their thorns so tiny. I asked my children to think loving thoughts for each plant. To wish for each of them to send their roots deep into the ground, to make their way in this new place, to find a home in this strange land. My daughter's almost-six-year old forehead wrinkled in concentration. One rose bush scratched her cheek. She continued planting, undeterred, her lips moving, whispering powerful incantations......
Please, please let the rose bushes live. And please let us find our own way, too. Please. That's all I ask.
With love,
Maryam in Marrakesh
