Shhhhh….they must’ve made a mistake, because this little
blog is a finalist in the 2008 Weblog Awards.
It seems those competition holders have been hoodwinked.
Now here’s the thing…..all the other finalists are….well,
you know, smart. Their blogs are filled with very important musings
about very important problems. Like wars and policy making and frightening things that go bump in the night. [And countries and
people behaving terribly to each other for reasons that make no sense at all.] Working on humanitarian issues by day as I do, I didn't want to blog about them by night. (Oh dear, risk of sadness overload...) So this blog is filled with….well,
you know, stuff. Stuff that isn’t terribly important. Like men with turbans, and slippers with sequins, and tea with mint.
But maybe if you look beyond all that, maybe if you look
into the heart of this Moroccan blog, you’ll find something worthy....the pursuit of the lovely amidst the mundane …. the quest for the signal despite the static….…. the
search for the poem in the piles of crumpled paper. In short, a little beauty, a little color, a little nice.
Maybe you'll also find a girl who gave up everything for a dream of a Marrakesh olive grove.....hoping (and then hoping some more) that she wouldn't stumble and fall flat on her face.
Maybe it's a blog, maybe it's a tale.........that's worth telling.
I feel shy to ask you to do anything for me. (My mother would be embarrassed at my bad
manners.) But if ever for a minute this
blog has made you wish you could call in sick to work, pack your bags and …. set off
for the airport …..then I ask you to consider voting for My Marrakesh right here. You can vote every day until
January 13 when the poll closes. I am trailing behind but Underdog was always my favorite cartoon as a little girl. Maybe it was your favorite, too....?
Thank you.
